TEMPLEMORE VISA SCAM

The 31-year-old was granted permission to live in the country following the fake union after which he applied to be in An Garda Siochana during a recruitment drive last year

A TRAINEE garda has been told to leave Ireland or face deportation after it was discovered he paid €15,000 to marry a gay woman from Latvia so he could stay in the country.

Arif Iqbal, who is originally from Bangladesh, resigned from Templemore after the Garda National Immigration Bureau found he was engaged in a sham marriage with the woman.

Arif Iqbal may face deportation if he doesn’t leave Ireland

The 31-year-old was granted permission to live in Ireland following the fake union after which he applied to be in An Garda Siochana during a recruitment drive last year.

The man arrived in Ireland around five years ago and claimed asylum.

It’s understood Iqbal and another man then paid €15,000 each to marry two gay Eastern European women so they could remain in Ireland.

By marrying these EU citizens the two men then obtained the right to live and work in Ireland legally.

Both couples took part in interviews with the Irish National Immigration Services where staff were duped that the marriages were legitimate.

Three years after the scam marriage took place, the man then applied to join the gardai and was given a place in the Garda Training College after passing a number of tests and interviews.

He was then offered a place in Templemore and began his training last November where he is believed to have been a highly regarded student.

It is understood that the fraudster had not yet finished his course at Templemore and was not involved in any active investigations.

Investigators from the Garda National Immigration Bureau then picked up on his scam marriage and took him, his ‘wife’ and two others in for questioning last week.

All four people then admitted to their involvement in the two sham marriages that took place in Dublin.

The garda trainee was forced to resign from his position in Templemore.

The man has been told to leave the country voluntarily or face deportation.

A criminal investigation into the fraud marriages is now underway and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana told the Irish Sun that they could not comment on an ongoing investigation.

Gardai halted more than 450 sham marriages last year under Operation Vantage after new legislation was introduced in 2015 against these “marriages of convenience.”

An elite cop unit was formed from officers inside the GNIB to tackle these sham weddings as criminals were making a fortune by fixing them in order to allow people legally live in Ireland.

Operation Vantage was set up by the gardai in 2015 to combat the soaring number of fake marriages taking place in Ireland.

Figures show that 500 marriages have “failed to proceed” due to objections from marriage registrars and investigators here.

And official statistics show how more than 88 people have been arrested and others deported from the State since the crackdown.

As a result of its success, Operation Vantage is now used as a model by Dutch-based crime fighting agency Eurojust — the EU’s Judicial Cooperation Unit.
