Employment Programme for Refugee Women

Employment Programme for Refugee Women

Programme Description

As part of its integration work, the Irish Refugee Council is launching a pilot programme aimed at addressing the barriers to employment experienced by women who have refugee status in Ireland – this includes women with refugee status, subsidiary protection, leave to remain or who are family reunification beneficiaries.

Overview

This pilot programme will work with 15 refugee women in the Dublin and greater Dublin area and will involve two components:

  • An employment preparation programme with one-to-one and peer support;

  • A 6-month supported work placement.

The goal of this project is to have all 15 women in employment or preparing for further education by the end of 2018.

Employment preparation programme

The employment preparation programme will involve group activities and classes around:

  • CV and cover letter writing; identifying and describing skills; job-hunting strategies

  • Interview preparation; tips and advice from employers; mock interviews

  • Understanding the Irish employment market and education system; employment rights and entitlements

  • Business and telephone English, psychometric testing

  • Self-care & goal-setting (SMART goals)

The programme will incorporate a peer support group, providing participants with an outlet to share feedback, discuss any obstacles encountered, and to promote peer learning. There will also be a mentorship programme, which will match participants with women in the local community so as to provide professional guidance and advice, and to encourage wider social inclusion.

Supported work placement

Upon completion of the employment preparation programme, participants will work with the employment officer to find a 6-month work placement.

Support will be provided around English language progression, and funding is available to cover childcare and transport costs.

Ideal candidates are women with an intermediate level of English and who are willing to commit to a 9 month programme.
