Nasc is recruiting a Connect Project Worker (2 days per week / 15 hours)

Nasc is an independent human rights organisation based in Cork City. We link migrants to their rights and seek to enable migrants to access justice and human rights. We work to ensure a just, inclusive and integrated society.

Under the direction of management, the Connect Project Worker will help to deliver the key objectives of the project. The Connect project provides a specialised advice and advocacy support service for young people aged 14-23 years, with a priority focus on supporting young people in Direct Provision and young people in or exiting Care. The Connect Project Social Worker works closely with Nasc’s Legal Service to provide a targeted and holistic information and advocacy service.

Main activities include:

• Support and advocacy to government departments, embassies etc. to help young people with their immigration issues.
• Information and practical support on access to financial assistance, accommodation, education and employment.
• Strengthened links to community integration, wellbeing and mental health supports.
• Support for young people to overcome any immigration-related or language barriers.
• Information and support on the asylum process.

Please note this position will be initially offered on a 6-month basis with a strong possibility of extending it for a further 12 months.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• In collaboration with the Connect Social Worker, ensure that the project delivery meets the presenting needs of the target group – young asylum seekers, refugees and migrants experiencing disadvantage.
• Mentoring and supporting the social integration of the young person.
• Record keeping; ensure that case notes are kept securely and maintained up to date.
• Monitoring of client support activities to ensure positive outcomes for the young person.
• Development and delivery of training to support the capacity of social work and community professionals to respond to the needs of refugee and asylum-seeking youth.
• Frequently liaise with the Social Worker and Nasc management to ensure accurate use of budgets and project delivery in line with funding requirements.
• Strict adherence to Nasc Child Protection policy and procedures.
• Project promotion and awareness raising
• Engage in supervision, regular CPD and career development opportunities.
• Other tasks as may be reasonably required.

Knowledge, experience, skills relevant for the position:

• Social Care, Community Work or Youth Work qualification or equivalent.
• A second language (for example – Arabic, French, Swahili) would be an advantage for this role.
• We particularly encourage applications from people with self-experience of the Direct Provision or Care systems.
• Previous experience working in a similar position.
• Commitment to equality and human rights;
• Enthusiastic and motivated;
• Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative;
• Ability to communicate cross-culturally to speakers of English as a second language.
• Strong time management skills;
• Understanding and sensitivity towards asylum and refugee issues;
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office.
