Call for Choral Facilitators for ‘Song Seeking’ Project

Posted On: October 17, 2018

‘Song Seeking’ is a group singing research project funded by Creative Ireland under the National Creativity Fund. The project involves a cross-agency collaboration between Mary Immaculate College (MIC) as the project lead, the Association of Irish Choirs (AOIC) and the Irish Refugee Council (IRC). Across six direct provision (DP) centres, the project involves intergenerational group singing workshops, shared ‘SingIn’ days with local choirs, a new choral commission, a large- scale ‘Big Sing’ event and a final conference. Research throughout the process and from multiple perspectives is integral to the project.

We are recruiting a small team of three choral facilitators who will co-design, develop and implement a unique, first-of its kind group singing project with asylum seekers. Team meetings, development sessions and meet-ups for co-reflection will be key to the project’s development.

This project is highly participatory through both research and practice in the following ways:

  1. Design and delivery of project: The choral facilitation team will be facilitated to co-design the singing workshops alongside the partners.
  2. DP workshops: The group singing workshops will occur across 6 DP centres. The newly set up singing groups across the centres will be intergenerational. Each choral facilitator will be assigned to 2 centres and deliver 10 group singing workshop sessions in each.
  3. Choral commission and performance: A new choral commission will be inspired and drawn from collective creative inputs through composer visits to all DP centres involved. The piece will be performed at a large-scale ‘Big Sing’ event involving all DP singing groups.
  4. ‘SingIn’ events: Planned ‘SingIns’ at each DP centre, invites local community choirs/groups to join the DP singing groups established.
  5. Research methods: The research methods used to capture data will involve the use of arts-based methods, reflective logs, interviews and surveys.
