Nasc, the Migrant and Refugee Rights Centre is an independent human rights organisation based in Cork City. We link migrants to their rights and seek to enable migrants to access justice and human rights. We work to ensure a just, inclusive and integrated society. We provide information and advice to migrants (including refugees, EU migrants, asylum seekers, work permit holders) and their families living in Ireland. Nasc uses this expertise to promote policy and legislative changes which would benefit migrant and ethnic minority communities.

Vacancy: Legal Intern

This is an unpaid internship but a small stipend for expenses will be available. We ask for a commitment of up to 6 months for 4 days per week (Monday – Thursday).

The Legal Intern will gain experience in immigration law and well as elements of protection law. The Legal Intern will also gain experience in working one-to-one with clients. Induction, training and ongoing supervision and feedback will be provided by a member of the Legal Team.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • To provide support in the daily operation of the legal clinics;
  • To assist in the operation of the Walk-in service;
  • To meet with clients on a one-to-one basis and individual queries as they arise through the legal clinics;
  • To carry out referrals to other services and specialist organisations where appropriate;
  • To draft correspondence for clients, government departments, NGOs, INGOs and other relevant organisations as appropriate;
  • To conduct research (legal and non-legal) as required to support the work of the legal clinics;
  • To attend case-work meetings;
  • To complete such administrative tasks as may be required, including maintaining manual and digital case files;
  • Other tasks as may be reasonably required.

Person Specification

The internship would suit a recent graduate. No prior experience is required however any experience working with migrants or assisting in information-delivery may be an advantage.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree (law degree preferable);
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (experience working/volunteering with members of the public an advantage);
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Commitment to human rights and social justice;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team and to manage time effectively;
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office;
  • Highly motivated with a desire to learn in a practical setting;
  • Strong verbal and written ability in English (please also include details of any additional languages spoken);
